Quartieri – A little bit of Naples Comes to Kilburn by M. Kuehn

Kilburn High Road; awash with restaurants, many rather disappointing (with the exception of the award winning Arianna 2, terrific Afghan cuisine) and so I was pleasantly surprised to hear about Quarteri, which, according to the blurb, comes with authentic pizza recipes from Naples.

It’s a smart place, quite chic and adorned with handsome young waiters, all eager to please. A large pizza oven was open to view and one wall was decorated with growing herbs and chillies. A cursory glance at the wine list produced a mental tick; greco di tufo and a lovely rose translated as the tears of Christ put us all in a very good mood.

A few fried Neapolitan ‘delights’ were ordered to share with a salad before our pizzas, (£6 and £8) all of us choosing the ‘La Diavola’, (£8.50) a spicy salami affair.

At this point I noticed that as we’d booked early, the restaurant had been quite empty, but within half an hour is was nearly full and by the time we left there wasn’t a seat left. Here’s why.

The salad was fresh, the dressing light and generous. The deep fried arrancini, crocche and zeppolle were a little heavy for my liking  but went down very well with my two pals.

The rose wine was a delight, (I’d not seen the Lacryma Christi in the UK before today) but the Greco was a tad disappointing. The pizza bases were crisp, appropriately thin and topped with the most delicious tomato base, gorgeous, spicy salami and dotted with just the right amount of cheese.

If you’ve ever been to chains like Pizza Express, the comparison in price is quite stark. The pizzas are around the £14 mark and this small, independent place has got the pricing just right.

It’s only just opened and already it’s very popular. Good ingredients, eager staff, comfortable surroundings and value for money. Good job Quartieri.
